About russ

Russ Ryan is an avid fan of movie posters -- sometimes even more so than the actual movies themselves! But he's not just a poster geek, he also was lucky enough to have a film produced by the makers of AMERICAN PIE -- the classic, unforgettable, much less successful National Lampoon presentation, REPLI-KATE, starring Ali Landry, James Roday, and Eugene Levy.

Peelling Back The Years…

Once dubbed “The Michelangelo of Pop Art”, Guy Peellaert (1934-2008), was probably most famous for his 70’s rock album covers and psychedelic art/music/fantasy book, Rock Dreams. But he also happened to create the haunting poster for Taxi Driver, and quite a few others. And although he passed away a few years ago at the age of 74, you can still check out his official website here.

Spring Broken

You’d think Hollywood would have made a classic Spring Break movie by now — but the results have been mixed. At least the posters are pretty! And now Moviegoods is paying tribute to the college party season.

Never Say Dorero

Just when I think I’ve seen about every James Bond movie poster artist out there, another one pops up…Case in point: R. Dorero, who created the Never Say Never Again poster, which was also Sean Connery’s last turn as 007. As for Mr. Dorero, his whereabouts are apparently also classified as not much information is available on him. But you can get the Lebanese version of NSNA for $23 at EMoviePoster.com!

March Madness Movies

I’m not a huge basketball fan, but it’s that time of the year again where office productivity slows to a halt while workers fill out their brackets for the NCAA basketball tournament. Let’s look at some of the most popular basketball movies of the last 20+ years…

Coconis Has Major Cojónes!

Often mistaken for the elegant, elaborate movie posters of design legend, Bob PeakTed Coconis has proven that his work is just as masterful. Having covered everything from books and magazines as well as one sheets, Mr. Coconis now lives in Paris and The Greek Islands doing illustrations of exotic Parisian women. Not bad work if you can get it!

Ever Seen A Grossman Naked?

I would like to pay my respects to the life of Peter Graves (who died yesterday at the age of 83) by showcasing one of his most oft-quoted movies, Airplane, whose poster was designed by acclaimed New York artist, Robert Grossman. Who could believe that lines like “Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?” would still resonate after all these years? Godspeed, Mr. Graves.

Off The Hooks!

Most movie sites talk about Bond girls — but we here at Meansheets prefer Bond illustrators! Which brings us to Mitchell Hooks, the man who drew up the original poster for Dr. No. Like Robert McGinnis, he was also a very successful book cover jacket designer of paperback romances and pulp fiction novels, and was inducted into The Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1999. So he’s kind of a big deal!

Gouzee’s Doozies

His name is Gouzee. Daniel Gouzee. Or Dan Gouzee for short. And I can’t figure out why this artist isn’t more well-known since he’s only contributed to some of the most popular movie franchises in motion picture history (i.e. James Bond). Oh well. Sit back and enjoy his work!
