Yet Another Chick Flick Poster Ripoff

Built by Bilinsky

Fritz Lang’s 1927 sci-fi classic, Metropolis, could hardly be more timely now with today’s troubling economy pitting wealthy owners versus the working class.

And with the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks this weekend, I thought it fitting to commemorate the work of Russian-born costume designer — yes, I said, costume designer — Boris Bilinsky (not to be confused with that other Belinsky), who also apparently dabbled in designing movie posters as seen below by these one-sheet architectural marvels that he constructed way back in the roaring 20s. Chris Ware Movie Posters!

Last year, I mentioned super-smart graphic novelist, Chris Ware’s foray into the movie poster design business with The Savages.

Lately though Mr. Ware has been busy updating his one-sheet résumé with a couple more excellent Indie credits — namely, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives and The Realms of the Unreal, which was distributed solely at Sundance a few festivals ago — as his Hired GUn creations are extremely popular in the limited-edition market.

Is It Art or Just A Movie Poster?

You don’t have to be a Van Gogh to have a movie about you, but sometimes the finer arts just don’t translate well onto the silver screen as you can see below with some of these recent famous artist biopics…

Go With Gid!

It’s pretty apparent that Raymond Gid (1905-2000) was a God-fearing man if you judge him by some of his stark, dramatic movie poster designs that reflect deep religious overtones.

Blessed with a mastery of typography, Gid went on to publish a number of books on liturgical and medieval texts — but he did not look down his nose upon commercial illustration, as he later created a set of famous advertising posters for Bally.

Long Live Lumet!

The movie industry lost a legend today with the passing of film director, Sidney Lumet. Known for his powerhouse courtroom dramas and just flat-out Hollywood classics like 12 Angry Men, Network, and Dog Day Afternoon, Lumet worked with the best actors of his day and even finished on a high note with his last film, the much-underappreciated dysfunctional family heist flick, Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead.

River of No Returns!

Although it’s not a super popular Marilyn Monroe film, the movie poster for River of No Return surely begs to differ…in all its different versions!
