The Art of Copy
We all know the movie stars, producers, and directors whose names appear on the movie poster credits of our favorite films — but what about those unsung creators who come up with the taglines on these posters? Meet one who was recently written up in The New York Times…
Put On Your Movie Poster Face!
Rudy Franchi of MOPO came across this Oh No You Didn’t post on the trends and tribulations of modern movie posters, including such commonly-known styles as “The Giant Faces In the Clouds”, “Sexy Back”, “Run For Your Life”, and many more, including this one below, “Is That Your Face or Are the Drugs Kicking In?”
It’s almost as funny as that old Funny or Die floating heads video.
Brokeback Flashback!
Speaking of Brokeback Mountain, here’s a funny New Yorker magazine cover spoof of the 2006 cowboy classic by one of my favorite modern day illustrators, Mark Ulriksen.
Cowboys In The Sky
Who doesn’t love the romance of the old western cowboy movie poster?
The Goon Squad
Move over, Drew Struzan — here comes something a little bloodier. The Goonies + Slap Shot = GOON !
By the way, the artist that did the 1970s Slap Shot poster is Craig Nelson (not Craig T. Nelson of Coach) and he also created John Wayne and The Cowboys — and unfortunately got caught up in the notorious Moscow On The Hudson-Saul Steinberg one-sheet scandal.
My Favorite Aunt and Uncle
Being an uncle myself, I’ve always had a soft spot for these eccentric family classics from Pierre Étaix (Mon Oncle) and California Nagel-esque airbrush artist, Peter Palombi (Travels With My Aunt)…
Birds of A Different Feather…
In honor of the upcoming Edgar Allen Poe-inspired The Raven, here’s a few more movie poster birds to gawk at, including The Birds by French artist, Boris Grinsson, as well as the Saul Bass masterpiece, The Birdman of Alcatraz (middle, in orange).
In the Shadow of Stooges
The new teaser poster for The Three Stooges just came out and it looks a little shady!
