Brokeback Flashback!
Speaking of Brokeback Mountain, here’s a funny New Yorker magazine cover spoof of the 2006 cowboy classic by one of my favorite modern day illustrators, Mark Ulriksen.
Cowboys In The Sky
Who doesn’t love the romance of the old western cowboy movie poster?
In Love With L’Amour
I’m not a super fashionable guy (as my friends and family will attest!) — but I am fashion-ated with this new documentary, L’Amour Fou, now available on DVD about the life and death of legendary designer, Yves Saint Laurent.
Following the icon’s death, Pierre Bergé, Mr. Saint Laurent’s lover of 50+ years, decided to auction off their prized art collection and luxury furnishings (which brought in a cool $484 million) — and the pic is a mournful, meditative look at not only their relationship, but also the obsessive nature of collectors — and brings up the question: is it the person or the stuff that brings true value to life?
More Marilyn!
Judging from the trailer, it looks like Marilyn Monroe is getting the Notting Hill treatment in the new movie, My Week With Marilyn.
Oh yeah, and check out the new flip-throughable MM book by photographer Bert Stern (and Norman Mailer) from Taschen!
Nirvana Goes Deep
This past weekend, rock music fans were in a deep state of Nirvana (not to be confused with the one-sheet rockin’ PosterNirvana), celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nevermind.
The famous swimming baby on the album cover reminded me of another similar underwater-themed movie poster, starring a legend in her own era, Jane Russell.
The Essence of Cesselon
Following his higher calling in movie posters, it’s no wonder that Italian illustrator, Angelo Cesselon, later moved onto drawing portraits of saints and other religious paintings for churches since looking at his beautiful work can be somewhat of a religious experience.
I’m not sure if he was repenting for all of his past pretty Marilyn Monroe depictions — regardless, his many artful creations are for the ages. (via Dominique Besson)
The Rum Diary Drinks Up Eat Pray Love?
It appears that the studio behind Johnny Depp’s new Hunter S. Thompson biopic, The Rum Diary, was inspired by the Eat Pray Love print marketing campaign…or maybe they just had too much to drink! (ImpAwards)
