Horseracing Movie Posters

Gertrude Stein’s grandson’s love for horseracing got me thinking more about the beauty of this colorful genre…And they’re off! (via ImP, Posteritati, MovieArt)

Woody Van Gogh!

Just caught the new Woody Allen romancer, Midnight In Paris — and while admiring the Van Gogh Starry Night inspiration for the movie poster, I couldn’t help but wonder if Van Gogh were alive today, what kind of one sheets would he create?

Considering his legendary slicing off the ear incident, I certainly hope he wouldn’t choose the blood-and-gore route like all of those horribly graphic Saw posters.

Delightful De Seta

Like a fine wine, the film posters of Italian illustrator, Enrico De Seta, born in 1908, have aged beautifully.

From kitsch to classics, this one-time comics artist has created numerous eye-popping images that will be celebrated in movie poster history for many more years to come.

The Miracle of Martinati

In the past, you’ve heard about the infamous Italian trio of artists who dubbed themselves The BCM Studio (BallesterCapitani-Martinati) — but I’ve yet to dedicate a single post to the movie posters credited solely to Luigi Martinati. So hang onto your hats, folks, because it doesn’t get much better than this…

Of course, if you want to be a true foglio aficionado, then do your eyes a favor and check out Dave Kehr’s enchanting-yet-simply-titled book, Italian Film Posters. (via Chisholm-Larsson and MoviePosterDB)

The Best of Braun!

The sexy style of German movie poster designer, Hans Braun, has a certain je ne sais quoi…

Part Jean Mascii, part Osvaldo Venturi, his bold, rich, timeless, passionate portraits lit up marquees throughout Europe in the 1950s and 60s with some of Hollywood’s most sizzling stars. (via KinoArt and LAMP)

Absolutely Avedon

After reading that yesterday would’ve been Marilyn Monroe’s 85th birthday, I also learned that Bill Gold hired Richard Avedon, the late world reknown fashion photographer, to do the photography for one of her most famous movie posters, The Prince and The Showgirl.

On top of that, Avedon also designed the stylish opening title sequence for Stanley Donen’s Funny Face, starring Audrey Hepburn.

The Wrath of Raf!

The work of underrated Argentinean movie poster artist known simply as RAF is not a bunch of riff-raff as he has been delighting movie poster fans for ages with his universally elegant style…

Disney and The Dude

What do vintage Disneyland posters and The Dude’s sweater from The Big Lebowski have in common? They were both up for auction recently from Profiles In History (aka the Hollywood Treasure crew) — and if you want to see the results, check out the scoop in Collectors Weekly (spoiler: the posters won!).

Spielberg Does Tintin

Steven Spielberg is producing a reboot of the classic French comic strip series, The Adventures of Tintin, originally conceived by Belgian artist, Jacques Remi aka Hergé (not to be confused with the similarly comic-influenced French illustrator, Hervé Morvan).

Here’s the newly-released poster (top left), along with an amusing E.T. spoof (top right) from FuckYeah Movie Posters as well as an original 1960’s ad by Raymond Savignac
