Mouth Wide Shut

The new Eddie Murphy movie, A Thousand Words, sounds an awful lot like that 90’s family comedy knee-slapper, Liar Liar.

Also, the one-sheet takes a few artistic liberties from that famously dirty defender of free speech, Larry Flynt. (ImpAwards)

No Payne, No Gain!

One of Hollywood’s cleverest directors, Alexander Payne, is coming out with The Descendants this weekend, starring George Clooney. Although Payne’s résumé boasts quality over quantity, let’s hope we see more from him sooner than later.

Also, if you didn’t see his short, but sweetly subtle gem from Paris Je’taime, feel free to sample it below…

Put On Your Movie Poster Face!

Rudy Franchi of MOPO came across this Oh No You Didn’t post on the trends and tribulations of modern movie posters, including such commonly-known styles as “The Giant Faces In the Clouds”, “Sexy Back”, “Run For Your Life”, and many more, including this one below, “Is That Your Face or Are the Drugs Kicking In?”

It’s almost as funny as that old Funny or Die floating heads video.

More Marilyn!

Judging from the trailer, it looks like Marilyn Monroe is getting the Notting Hill treatment in the new movie, My Week With Marilyn.

Oh yeah, and check out the new flip-throughable MM book by photographer Bert Stern (and Norman Mailer) from Taschen!

Jobs Jobs Jobs…

Visionary. Genius. Icon. It’s not often that these kind of lofty terms seem too insufficient to describe a person — but that just might be the case in regards to tech giant, Steve Jobs, the founding father of Apple Computer, who passed away this week at the age of 56. Even if you don’t own a Mac computer or iPhone or iPod, it’s hard to imagine modern life without his contributions.

ORIGINALLY POSTED MAY 2010: These posters are from Apple’s Think Different ad campaign back in the early 90’s.

Although this post doesn’t feature movie posters, one could argue that Steve Jobs and his Mac have done more for visual artists than any invention of mankind — except for maybe whoever came up with the paintbrush. But since we don’t know who that is, I’m going with Jobs!

Drive Hard!

Ryan Gosling appears to be doing his best Steve McQueen in this weekend’s high-testosterone octane release, Drive.

Btw, here’s a few other scenic drives, including the classic Taxi Driver one-sheet, which features the graphic stylings of Guy Peellaert)…

Movie Poster Neon!

Is it a strip club or a movie poster marquee? Dave Rosen of Posteropolis discovered these trippy neon art movie posters done by UK digital artist, Mr. Whaite.

Your Friends and Moderns?

Pop artist, Alex Katz, did this 1990’s movie poster for Neil LaBute’s urban-angst flick, Your Friends & Neighbors — which looks nicely paired with the 1988 one-sheet for The Moderns, a film that loosely covers that same territory of Woody Allen’s recent Midnight In Paris — proving once again that some posters are indeed timeless.
