About russ

Russ Ryan is an avid fan of movie posters -- sometimes even more so than the actual movies themselves! But he's not just a poster geek, he also was lucky enough to have a film produced by the makers of AMERICAN PIE -- the classic, unforgettable, much less successful National Lampoon presentation, REPLI-KATE, starring Ali Landry, James Roday, and Eugene Levy.

The X-Rated Art of Penelope

Courtesy of EMP, let me introduce you to the designs of Penelope, an X-Rated movie poster artist (and the very first “Adult” artist featured on the Meansheets)! Although she is by no means a Bob Peak or Saul Bass, you’ve got to give the girl (or guy?) credit for her consistency in style. I would’ve loved to have seen her dirty Art Deco-y take on a Russ Meyer flick!

Green Poster of the Day

It’s certainly not listed in the bargain bin, but if you’ve got the green — then CineMasterpieces has got the slime! (via MoPO)

River of No Returns!

Although it’s not a super popular Marilyn Monroe film, the movie poster for River of No Return surely begs to differ…in all its different versions!

Strippers!

Yesterday we unleashed Jack The Ripper and today we’re going to lift up the sheets on The Stripper, a little-known 60’s B-movie starring Joanne Woodward who, as you may well know, was happily married to Paul Newman for 50+ years. The top two French versions of the poster were done by French kingpin-up artist, Boris Grinsson.

Jack the Rippers!

Jack The Ripper is one of those reknown British tales of terror that’s been passed down through generations with many different versions, much like Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde — and will presumably sooner than later be given the big-budget Major Motion Picture remake á la Sherlock Holmes.

But for the time being, let’s enjoy these killer French movie posters of The Grim Ripper by such designers as Jouineau Bourduge (top left) and the like…

All That Jazz…

Speaking of Billie Holiday, here’s a few more jazzy movie posters featuring the music biopics of Dexter Gordon, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk (the latter two films of which were produced by superstar jazz fan, Clint Eastwood).

And if jazz trumpet is your thing, you might also dig these Chet Baker movie posters by famed fashion photog, Bruce Weber.

Lady Day Smackdown!

No, this is not a Diana Ross tribute — but more like a movie poster celebration of Billie Holiday, the greatest female Jazz singer in history! The minimalist movie poster in the middle was created by legendary movie ad firm, Diener Hauser. (via IMP)

Pickup My Posters!

There is quite a bit of controversy about the pros and cons of linenbacking/poster restoration, as evident on such passionate movie poster forums as MoPO and APF — but check out this cool before and after job done on the classic 1950’s bad girl one sheet, Pickup, by Dario Casadei of Vintage Movie Art.

Even if you aren’t a fan of movie poster repair, Casadei’s informative website uncovers some illuminating tricks and pics of the process…

X’ed Out!

Yahoo! has publicly ripped the new X-Men posters as “amateurish”. To me, it looks like Saul Bass meets “The Floating Heads“…You be the judge!

Also included in the Yahoo! spanking is a link to Oddee’s Worst Movie Posters Ever, which takes potshots at such legendary poster artists as Larry Salk (Superman 3) and Richard Amsel (Up The Sandbox).
