Put On Your Movie Poster Face!

Rudy Franchi of MOPO came across this Oh No You Didn’t post on the trends and tribulations of modern movie posters, including such commonly-known styles as “The Giant Faces In the Clouds”, “Sexy Back”, “Run For Your Life”, and many more, including this one below, “Is That Your Face or Are the Drugs Kicking In?”

It’s almost as funny as that old Funny or Die floating heads video.

Bad Dads.

From now until November 22, the Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco is presenting an art show-based-on-a-film(s) called Bad Dads: A Tribute to the Films of Wes Anderson, featuring one of my personal faves, The Royal Tenenbaums

Do It David O’Daniel Style!

Much like his predecessors — and contemporaries — Peter Strausfeld, Olly Moss, and Jason Munn who all supplied their original movie poster visions to the UK’s Academy Cinema and Alamo Drafthouse, respectively — now comes along David O’Daniel and his wonderful limited edition silkscreens for The Castro Theatre in San Francisco.

Hans Off!

Daniel Levy of NYC’s Illustraction Gallery has a nice little write-up this week on Hans Hillman, a prolific German movie poster designer who created over 130 movie posters, most famously The Maltese Falcon

Deconstructing The Stenbergs

Georgii and Vladimir Stenberg, aka The Stenberg Brothers, a pair of Russian Constructivist poster designers from the 1920’s, were largely forgotten until a 1997 MoMA exhibit restored their adventurous avant-garde legacy.

And this summer, The Tony Shafrazi Gallery in NYC once again revisited their finely-constructed prints (which I unfortunately missed!) — but it’s still available for viewing on the website. (via Posteropolis)

Simmons Does Sports Convention

If you grew up in the 1960s, 70s, or 80s and know the difference between a PSA 8 and a PSA 9, then you’re ready to tackle Bill Simmons’ laugh-out-loud funny take on his latest trip to The National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago (which looks like a first cousin to just about any movie memorabilia convention).

Along with espousing his theory of The Collector’s Beard — a bad habit that is defined as a father buying vintage stuff for his kid, but really it’s just stuff that he secretly wants (that the kid won’t give a rat’s ass about) — as well as his wife’s reactions to some of his more useless purchases, it’s a must-read for anyone possessing the collecting gene. Here’s an ESPN video clip from the 2010 show.
