About russ

Russ Ryan is an avid fan of movie posters -- sometimes even more so than the actual movies themselves! But he's not just a poster geek, he also was lucky enough to have a film produced by the makers of AMERICAN PIE -- the classic, unforgettable, much less successful National Lampoon presentation, REPLI-KATE, starring Ali Landry, James Roday, and Eugene Levy.

Poster Ripoff?

I couldn’t help but notice the strong resemblance between the posters for Mel Gibson’s new thriller, Edge of Darkness, and a 1956 movie called Edge of the City starring Sidney Poitier, which was dreamt up by everyone’s favorite design legend, Saul Bass.

Long Live JD Salinger

I don’t usually do book covers, but I couldn’t help it with the news of JD Salinger’s death. Like screenwriters who write spec scripts, I guess graphic artists do spec book covers. See if you can tell the “real” The Catcher In The Rye covers above from the “fakes”.

Recently, there was even a proposed sequel and a mock movie poster.

Me So Chorney!

Like many poster artists of the 70’s and 80’s, Steven Chorney paid the bills doing illustration work for the likes of TV Guide and Reader’s Digest. Similar in style to Drew Struzan, his slick, shiny, starry-eyed one-sheets often stand out from the pack.

Sundance Kids

The Sundance Film Festival has had its share of winners and losers over the years…(Although any movie that gets made is a victory in my book!)

Which ones do you remember?

Demi Moore Loves Lichtenstein

Moviegoods just released the poster for Demi Moore’s new movie which resembles the work of a very famous pop artist. But I guess that’s okay because his son is the director.

Thank god they didn’t rip off Damien Hirst.

The Brothers Hildebrandt!

Everyone’s heard of The Coens, The Wachowskis, and The Hughes Bros — but what about Tim and Greg Hildebrandt? These wonder twins were purveyors of sci-fi/fantasy art (unfortunately, Tim died in 2006) and their legendary Star Wars poster is beloved by many Lucas fanboys, but their illustration was in fact based on the already existing Tom Jung version below (top right).

Are You Ready For Some Football?

It’s the NFL Playoffs this weekend. And nothing gets me more pumped for football than football movie posters! Yeah, not exactly…but Coach Pacino’s lockerroom speech from Any Given Sunday is pretty damn good.

Grinsson Remake!

Boris Grinsson also did the original art for Bedtime Story (1964) — but if you haven’t heard of that one, you might remember the 1988 remake, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Grinsson and Bear It

The world tour of movie posters takes us back to 1950’s France and the home of legendary French artist, Boris Grinsson. This guy must be pretty good as his work will be on display this weekend at the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences in Beverly Hills.

Check out his rich, colorful renditions of such classics as The Hustler, Double Indemnity, Some Like It Hot, and From Russia With Love. And if you really enjoy his stuff, go buy the book at Posteritati.
