About russ

Russ Ryan is an avid fan of movie posters -- sometimes even more so than the actual movies themselves! But he's not just a poster geek, he also was lucky enough to have a film produced by the makers of AMERICAN PIE -- the classic, unforgettable, much less successful National Lampoon presentation, REPLI-KATE, starring Ali Landry, James Roday, and Eugene Levy.

Renaissance Clown

Who says all clowns are created equal? Pierre Étaix, most famous in the design world as the illustrator of the iconic red Mon Oncle movie poster, has done it all. Getting his start in showbiz as a clown in the mid-’50s, he later served an apprenticeship under Jacques Tati as his gofer, gag writer, assistant director, and storyboardist.

But that wasn’t enough for the ambitious funnyman Étaix, as he went onto act and direct in a slew of critcally-acclaimed films, including The Suitor and Le Grand Amour — and then also became known as such a comic genius that Paris-Match dubbed him “the French Buster Keaton” and was often compared to Jerry Lewis, to his dismay.

Oh yeah, did I mention that Étaix is still clowning around working, too? The guy just finished up a part in the 2009 release, Micmacs — but if you want to go back to look at his ’60s classics, the films have recently been restored for all to enjoy!

Stolen Art?

This weekend, I got a chance to see the captivating doc, The Art of The Steal, which details the “transfer” of the art collection of The Barnes Foundation, which houses some of the most valuable 19th and 20th Century Impressionist artworks in America (lots of Renoirs, Cézannes, and Matisses) from a small educational institution in Pennsylvania to The Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The film brings up many interesting questions about the big business of culture, so whether you view the film as a non-profit corporate takeover (which the filmmakers obviously do) or just a conspiracy theory, it’s definitely worth adding to your Netflix list.

Plus, for all you mighty poster collectors out there, the film advises the importance of drawing up an iron-clad will to protect your wishes and those of the future owners of your most prized pieces!

Boobs’n Butts!

To get you through the long Labor Day weekend (and officially take Meansheets to a new all-time low), I’m going to top off “Body Parts Theme Week” by busting out with some of the most obvious overtly sexual movie posters!

And okay, to be fair to the opposite sex, I wanted to come up with a post called “Cocks!” — but there just weren’t enough one-sheets exposing that territory. At least none that weren’t X-Rated.

Btw, if sex truly sells — how come I haven’t heard of a lot of these movies?

COCKS!

Wait…I was wrong!!!

LEGS!

Keeping up with the body parts theme, here’s a nice little spread from Imgur via Cinematical

And More Legs…

Hot Lips!

Sorry if I got you excited — but no, this is not a Loretta Swit aka “Hot Lips” Houlihan from M*A*S*H tribute — though I do love her work!

In the world of movie posters — and I guess this pretty much goes for life, in general — there are some body parts that are just more visually appealing than others…

Poster Ripoff?

Looking over all these French movie posters recently has gotten me googly-eyed…Is it just my visual paranoia or does this cheesy 80’s teen rom com with John Cusack rip off a 1968 foreign cult classic?
