I didn’t get a chance to see all of the new Ken Burns PBS doc, Prohibition — but what I did see definitely quenched my thirst as Hollywood’s favorite mobster, Al Capone, played a huge role…

Dollars For Duke!
Jobs Jobs Jobs…
Visionary. Genius. Icon. It’s not often that these kind of lofty terms seem too insufficient to describe a person — but that just might be the case in regards to tech giant, Steve Jobs, the founding father of Apple Computer, who passed away this week at the age of 56. Even if you don’t own a Mac computer or iPhone or iPod, it’s hard to imagine modern life without his contributions.
ORIGINALLY POSTED MAY 2010: These posters are from Apple’s Think Different ad campaign back in the early 90’s.
Although this post doesn’t feature movie posters, one could argue that Steve Jobs and his Mac have done more for visual artists than any invention of mankind — except for maybe whoever came up with the paintbrush. But since we don’t know who that is, I’m going with Jobs!
Do It David O’Daniel Style!
Much like his predecessors — and contemporaries — Peter Strausfeld, Olly Moss, and Jason Munn who all supplied their original movie poster visions to the UK’s Academy Cinema and Alamo Drafthouse, respectively — now comes along David O’Daniel and his wonderful limited edition silkscreens for The Castro Theatre in San Francisco.
Gorka Park
The work of Wiktor Gorka (1922-2004), the pride of many Polish movie poster fans, is not to be messed with. Serving up Westerns as well as many other Hollywood and foreign cinema classics, including Moby Dick, The Professionals, and 2001: Space Odyssey, he gave us a picnic for the eyes right between the eyes…
Jagged Edges…
The new Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher one-sheet for the upcoming biopic, The Iron Lady, looks like it was ripped off the pages of late 20th Century movie poster history…
Adventures in Babysitting 2011?
Fresh off his on-the-Moneyball portrayal, let’s hope that Jonah Hill’s new R-rated-looking PG-13 flick, The Sitter, is as funny and charming as the original PG’d Adventures In Babysitting (w/poster by Drew Struzan). (ImpAwards)
Tattooed!
I’ve never been a huge fan of tattoos — with the exception of Hervé Villechaize (Fantasy Island) — but these inked-up one-sheets do have a certain colorful charm, don’t they?
By the way, the Casino Royale was done by Bond poster expert, Robert McGinnis.
Crafty Cowboys Get Craftsy
From Richard Amsel (The Shootist, McCabe and Mrs. Miller) and Ron Lesser (Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid) comes this badass foursome of 70s western movie posters that could just as easily fit into any of today’s hipster general stores…
