Objectified
Just picked up Steve Martin’s new fiction novel set in the 1990’s New York City art world, An Object of Beauty — and it seems to read a lot better than his recent chat at The 92nd Y. Apparently, the crowd there was expecting an appearance from “The Wild and Crazy Guy”, not a serious art talk.
Although I’m only a hundred pages in, the famous comedian/art collector obviously knows his way around an art museum as the book features some interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits about Sotheby’s and the other major auction houses as well as cameos from various high-profile contemporary art gallery owners like Robert Miller and Larry Gagosian. And I’m sure many of the same dirty dealer tricks mentioned in the book have occurred in the movie poster business, too, albeit on a much less grander scale.

Ah, today’s a sad day. I’ve come to the realization (or at least my significant other has) that I have too many posters, and not enough wall space…
So I’ve decided to put up a few of my “extra” vintage one sheets and French posters up for sale at the brand-spankin’ new Meansheets Poster Shop on Etsy for all those artsy craftsy design folks out there!

The Way We Was…
Over the long weekend, I picked up the Italian 1p movie poster (aka “foglio”) of The Way We Were from EMoviePoster for $40 (top left).
Initially, moments after winning, I felt a bit of buyer’s remorse since I’m not a huge Streisand fan, but then I saw that it was going for $300 and up on other websites, which made me feel much better…Plus, with Christmas coming around the corner, I need to get something for Grandma. You know how the ladies love that Bobby Redford!

In the mood for a little Italian? Then you’ll surely feast on New York Times film critic/vintage movie poster collector Dave Kehr’s “imaginatively-titled” book, Italian Film Posters!
Kehr goes beyond the traditional Italian classics, such as La Dolce Vita and The Bicycle Thief — and features a bowlful of astonishing, lesser-known beauties as well as fills in some nice chunks of history on the notorious BCM Studio (Anselmo Ballester, Alfredo Capitani, and Luigi Martinati), a trio of artists that launched their designs on the early International movie poster industry. And even though the book’s already been out a few years, I’m sure you’ll agree that the images featured inside are timeless.

Hollywood Treasure
Last night, I checked out the new Syfy reality show, Hollywood Treasure, featuring Joe Maddalena, owner of the Profiles In History Hollywood auction house, as he and his crack team of memorabilia hunters track down valuable props from The Golden Age and beyond.
In one episode, Mr. Maddalena visits the house of Dawn Wells, aka Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island, to get her to consign some of her famous outfits from the 1960s hit TV show. Personally, though, I was always more of a Ginger fan (played by Tina Louise) and these lovely movie posters from God’s Little Acre and Day of the Outlaw back me up on that…
