Super Salk!
Although not as well-known or, quite frankly, important as Jonas Salk, his polio-fighting namesake, Larry Salk (1936-2004) (no relation) made his own profound impact on the world of key art. He got his start in fashion illustration and then quickly evolved into the world of movie poster work, where he designed over 165 one sheets for various film studios and distributors.
But, ironically, what Salk is probably going to be most remembered for is his infamous oil portrait of Kramer from an episode of the 90’s hit TV show, Seinfeld.

Hopper Along
One of Hollywood’s biggest characters, Dennis Hopper, has died today at age 74. Spanning a career that last six decades, Mr. Hopper worked with everyone from James Dean (Rebel Without A Cause) to Marlon Brando (Apocalypse Now) to Jack Nicholson (Easy Rider) to Quentin Tarantino (True Romance) — and received Oscar nominations for the Easy Rider screenplay as well as a Best Supporting Actor nod for Hoosiers. Besides his five ex-wives and four kids, he also leaves behind an impressive art collection.
RIP: Gary Coleman (1968-2010)
Diff’rent Strokes child star, Gary Coleman, has died at 42.
Hustlers!
There’s a new book out by Paul Newman’s buddy-in-crime, A.E. Hotchner, called Paul and Me. And it sounds like Newman was quite the prankster!
Aside from the many great stories about the man and his numerous charitable acts not involving salad dressing, the book got me all nostalgic about those wonderful movie posters from The Hustler, most notably the French versions by Boris Grinsson…
Remake Monday: Alfie
What’s it all about, Alfie? It’s hard to believe that at one point in time Michael Caine was a heartthrob on par to this generation’s Jude Law. Not that he’s not an incredibly charming, attractive, accomplished guy — but I guess I just can’t get those images of him from Blame It On Rio or Hannah And Her Sisters out of my head.
