My Favorite Godfathers

To continue with mob week, I’m going to the mattresses The Godfather movie posters to make you an offer that you can’t refuse…

And if that’s not sweet enough for ya, then I’ll also throw in a mention of Taschen’s Godfather Family Album.

Scarfaces!

Everybody’s favorite Scarface or, at least, the most popular is Al Pacino. But a lot of different actors have tackled the part of the notorious gangleader, or some B-movie bastardized version of the character.

So say hello to my little friends, which were created by the likes of such notorious poster artists as Osvaldo Venturi (bottom, left), Michel Landi (top, 4th on right), Rinaldo Geleng (top, far right), and Constantin Belinsky (bottom, middle).

Remake Monday: Just Go With It

Although the trailer looks more like a remake of the Blake Edwards’ Bo Derek-starrer, 10, the new Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston-Brooklyn Decker movie, Just Go With It, is actually based on the late 1960s Walter Matthau-Goldie Hawn film, Cactus Flower.

By the way, the Cactus Flower one-sheet below was done by Bond designer legend, Robert McGinnis; and the voluptuous 10 by American beauty, John Alvin. (via ImpAwards)

Have A Great Weekend!

Russ Meyer Movie Posters

Upon hearing the death of Faster, Pussycat! cult queen, Tura Satana (who actually got her first role on Billy Wilder’s Irma La Douce), it brought to mind indie pioneer, Russ Meyer, who kickstarted Satana’s career into overdrive.

Although Meyer’s films were hardly even b-movie masterpieces, it is quite evident that his irreverent style inspired a whole legion of future film directors, including Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriquez, with his cartoonishly violent, sexploitative romps.

Segal vs. Seagal!

Not many film fans would confuse George Segal with Steven Seagal (or even Jonathan Livingston Seagull) — but I thought it might be a fun movie poster smackdown anyway!

Besides, Seagal’s getting up there in years and his martial arts/action roles have been tapering off so he will soon probably start playing the goofy, wisecracking father/boss/lawyer (á la De Niro in Meet The Parents) that Segal has so mastered over the years. (via ImpAwards)

Cute Couples!

Here’s a couple movie posters about some fun / romantic /cheesy couples from all over the globe…

Peak Show

And the Oscar goes to…Bob Peak (1927-1992)!

That’s right, the fourth floor gallery at AMPAS (i.e., The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences) in Beverly Hills, CA is having an exhibition now until mid-April of the greatest one-sheets drawn by the 1960’s and 70’s poster king. So if you’re not impressed by this year’s nominees, you will certainly find a few winners from Mr. Peak’s best pictures.

The Polish Matisse

Ever hear the one about the Polish actress who wanted to be a movie star? Yeah, she slept with the screenwriter!

Okay, so maybe that kind of old school Hollywood humor isn’t for everybody — but yesterday I mentioned the Polish poster artist, Jan Mlodozeniec (1929-2000), and he is definitely no joke. From the early 1950’s through the 80’s, Mr. Mlodozeniec designed a good majority of the movie posters for the most popular Polish and American films that played in his homeland. From Barbarella to Gremlins, Mlodozeniec’s vivid understanding of color once even compared him to Matisse. So even if you don’t like off-color jokes, at least we all can enjoy the bright, beautiful world of Jan Mlodozeniec…
