Flashback: Poster Lawsuit!
Hollywood lawsuits are common…even in the world of movie posters. And famous artists are no exception. Back in 1987, Saul Steinberg sued Columbia Pictures for filching his classic 1976 New Yorker mag cover (“View of the World From 9th Avenue”) to use for their 80’s Robin Williams immigrant comedy, Moscow On The Hudson. And it looks like Steinberg had a pretty good case.
Vic Gets Ripped?
Recognize the similarities between the much-lauded 1989 Oscar winner, Driving Miss Daisy, and Vic Fair’s poster for the 1973 British melodrama, The Hireling? Hmmm.
Poster Ripoff?
I couldn’t help but notice the strong resemblance between the posters for Mel Gibson’s new thriller, Edge of Darkness, and a 1956 movie called Edge of the City starring Sidney Poitier, which was dreamt up by everyone’s favorite design legend, Saul Bass.
